Ricardo de Madrazo was a third generation member of the prominent Spanish Madrazo family of artists. The strong influence on his art of that of his uncle Mariano Fortuny is apparent in At the Well, in which Madrazo depicted a picturesque genre scene and combined realism with vivid light color and lively brush handling.
