American, 1877-1948
Autumn Landscape with a Fieldhand Resting on a Wheelbarrow
Signed Marie Lokke (lr)
Oil on canvas

Private collection

Marie Lokke was born in Christiana (now Oslo) and studied in Oslo and Dresden before settling in the United States in 1902. In 1903 she married Finn Mathiesen, whom she later divorced. While remaining in the America until returning to Europe in 1916, she exhibited widely (including showing at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915) and studied with Charles Hawthorne in Provincetown. This painting falls into the tradition of images of country life and its labors, captured here with an Impressionist attention to light and a sensitivity to the field worker's moment of rest.
