Of bombe form, with a shell and gadrooned border to the rim, on paw supports with lion mask joins, the domed cover with lion mask and foliate handle. Length over handles 16 inches (40.6 cm), total approximately 298 ounces.

The arms are those of Lieutenant-General Sir Colquhoun Grant (1764-1835), K.C.B., nicknamed "The Black Giant" for his incredible physical strength. Grant served in many colonial theaters of war throughout his distinguished career including the Peninsular Wars and at Waterloo where he had no less than five horses shot from under him. He later served as a Member of Parliament and as groom to the bedchamber of Prince Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, later King of Hanover.
