This painting and the one following were probably once part of a series illustrating the Cardinal Virtues of Prudence, Justice, Temperance and Fortitude. This would have illustrated Prudence, here shown with a mirror as her attribute, in reference to the Latin maxim nosce te iipsum, "know thyself."

Glue relined. Frame abrasion around the edges. Some inpainted cracks on theleft side of the face of Prudence. Scattered touches of restoration on the dress of the young woman. Some restoration to the rocks.
