This portion of the composition of Raphael's painting shows (lower register, from left) the philosophers Epicurus (wearing a wreath), Boethius (left foreground, leaning forward), Averroes (wearing a turban), and, seated in the foreground and writing in a book, Pythagoras (thought to be a portrait of the architect Donato Bramante). Standing to his right are (possibly) Hypatia and Parmenides. The identificaton of other figures is less certain.

Mounted on light canvas. Losses around the edges. Several horizontal tears in the main body of the work; smaller tears along the lower edge. There is a horizontal crease running parallel to the upper edge.
