Invincible Class Battlecruisers at Dawn, circa 1909
Signed Montague Dawson (lr)
Oil on canvas
18 x 26 inches (45.7 x 66 cm)

The Invincible Class battlecruisers were three sister ships all completed in 1908. They were named Indomitable, Inflexible, and Invincible. Just over 20,000 tons fully loaded they were 567 feet in overall length and had a 78.5 feet beam. Their main armament consisted of eight 12 inch guns mounted on four turrets, with another sixteen 4 inch guns amidships. They were capable of over 25 knots at full speed and were some of the fastest ships in the Grand Fleet. In this painting, the lead ship is definitely one of the three, although it is not possible to say precisely which one. The painting shows them around 1909 before they had their fore funnels raised.
