Dixon was a scout, plainsman, buffalo hunter, and Indian fighter, fought at the second battle of Adobe Walls (which he helped found) in 1874, and later that year, enlisted as a scout by Nelson A. Miles, earned the Congressional Medal of Honor (a rare award for a civilian) in the Buffalo Wallow Fight against a Kiowa and Comanche Indian offensive. Howes B134.
