A Christmas Carol. In prose. Being a ghost story of Christmas.
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1844. Second American edition, later impression (preceded by Philadelphia issue earlier that year). Publisher's printed blue wrappers lettered in black. 9 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches (24 x 14.5 cm); ad leaf at front, 31 pp., the text in two columns (conforms to the third copy listed by Podeschi). The covers soiled and somewhat stained, spotting within.
Scarce early printing of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, from the library of Eleazar Parmly. While priority is given to the Philadelphia Carey & Hart issue as the first American edition for its fidelity in design to the London Chapman & Hall first English edition, it has been posited that this New York issue could have preceded the Philadelphia issue given the speed in which Harper & Brothers were able to produce these two column pamphlets. Podeschi, Dickens. The Gimbel Collection, A81.
