Mrs. Rabbit with Basket and Umbrella in the Forest.
Watercolor on silk after the illustration in Peter Rabbit, circa 1901-1905. The image area in the frame 5 inches round (13 cm); the full sheet of silk 6 x 6 inches (15.5. x 15.5 cm); Framed. The image area fine, the extremities under the mat lightly toned and with a few spots.

"Then old Mrs. Rabbit took a basket and her umbrella, and went through the wood to the baker's. She bought a loaf of brown bread and five currant buns" - A contemporary watercolor on silk recreating the drawing published in The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Contemporary watercolors and drawings depicting the characters from Potter's most beloved book are rare and infrequent at auction. The present example was sold in 1987 and is distinct from a group of later drawings prepared in 1927 to raise money for the National Trust.
