War and Peace. A Historical Novel.
New York: William S. Gottsberger, 1887-88. Six volumes, original printed wrappers. 6 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches (16.5 x 11.5 cm); various paginations and ads in most volumes. Some losses to spines but most lettering intact, scattered chips, short tears and toning but in sound condition overall, the very faint signature of H.W. Spaulding to the upper margin of each wrapper.
An early printing of the first American edition, very rare in wrappers. Gottsberger first published War and Peace using Clara Bell's expert translation in New York in 1886 and present are early re-issues of each part dated 1887-88. We trace no copy in wrappers at auction of any first or early printing, most having been bound in cloth. Comprises: Before Tilsit 1805-1807 (1888, wrapper of vol. 2 dated 1887 but title 1888, ads); The Invasion, 1807-1812 (1887, ads); and Borodino, The French at Moscow-Epilogue-1812-1820 (1887, ads in first part only).
