New York: Simon & Schuster, [1939]. First edition, an early printing, inscribed on the front free endpaper "To Joan Murchison from Ludwig Bemelmans" and with a small drawing of an airplane to the pastedown. Publisher's cloth, in original dust jacket with price present. 12 x 9 inches (30 x 22 cm); color illustrations and endpapers, unpaginated. Light shelfwear, a paper label affixed to front free endpaper near inscription, the jacket very good but with tape repairs along the upper and lower extremities, light wear to folds.
"In an old house in Paris, that was covered with vines" - so begins Bemeleman's classic Madeline, here inscribed and in an early issue without the date on the title page but with 12 girls instead of 11 in the "They went home and broke their bread" illustration.
