Contemporary three-quarters red calf over marbled boards, the spine with black lettering labels, cloth slipcase. 7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches; vi, 332; iv, 340; iv, 342 pp., bound without half-titles. The spines faded to brown and rubbed with the lettering labels possibly renewed, old dampstain along joints not affecting interior, small stain to title of volume III, light foxing worst at endpapers, bookplate of Helen B, Taylor to pastedown of volume III, volume I with the morocco booklabel of Silvain S. Brunschwig.
Blackmore's most enduring work and a high spot of 19th century literature. This copy was part of the English literature collection built by Silvain S. Brunschwig and was sold in his sale at Park-Bernet, 9 April 1951, lot 9.
