Lot 168[Film Storyboards]
Franz Bachelin. Group of thirty storyboards for the 1946 production of Two Years before the Mast
. Original storyboards; 15 x 20 inches (38 x 51 cm) on Strathmore art board. 6 of the boards show scenes in vignette panels, rendered in grisaille in ink wash over pencil, with typed notes and dialogue carefully tipped beneath each panel, plus the occasional handwritten notation (four boards have 16 panels, one 12, the last 6). 22 offer anywhere from 1 to 4 scenes, executed in ink and color gouache over pencil, with extensive handwritten marginalia; plus 2 more storyboards in the same vein, but uncolored. Minor soiling and toning, some wear to extremities, overall a sound and attractive group. Misattributed to the wrong film in pencil on the verso.
Based (exceedingly loosely) on Richard Henry Dana's classic novel of the sea, the film, directed by John Farrow, starred Alan Ladd as Charles Stewart and Brian Donlevy as Dana. The art direction was by Franz Bachelin and Hans Dreier, and these storyboards (which must represent a small portion of the whole that would have been prepared) were likely painted by Bachelin (though they are unsigned, as is typical). The color works in particular are very attractive and exceedingly well rendered.
