Robert E. Lee, as President of Washington College, here writes regarding the potential acquisition of Greenough's bust of John C. Calhoun stating that "its possession by the College would be particularly desirable" but ultimately reports the College does not have funds for the piece given financial obligations to expand the curriculum. Lee expresses his desire that if a friend of the school were to procure and present it to the College it would be welcomed.
