Lot 42Large Blue and White Late Ming Double-Gourd Bottle Vase

The squared lower hemisphere is painted above a lappet border with Shoulao and three other Immortals standing on lingzhi fungus which hover above the Eastern Sea; in the distance are roofs, ruyi and garlands. The sharply incut shoulder is painted with ruyi-head clouds dividing eight Shou rondels, the four at the corners being crowned each with a large lotus flower. The neck is painted with four larger Shou rondels and ruyi-head clouds below a lappet border. The ovoid upper hemisphere is painted with two Immortals and two cranes bearing Shou rondels on their backs. Height 25 1/8 inches (63.8 cm).

This bottle vase was brought from Holland in the late 1880s by the great-grandfather of the present owner.

4 cm L-shaped crack at mouth; chip out of the same side of the bottle.
